Town Lake
downtown Austin
Open to the public 6am-6pm

From the Tom Miller dam South to the Longhorn dam, Town Lake is 5 miles long and covers 416 surface acres. Of the seven lakes in the Highland Lake system, Town Lake is the youngest.  Town Lake winds past downtown Austin and is beautiful place to walk, hike and picnic.  Motorized vehicles are not allowed in the lake, which makes it the perfect spot for canoes, kayaks and paddleboats (which can be rented at the Rowing Dock and Zilker Park).  Paddling from the furthest end North (Tom Miller Dam) to the furthest end South (Longhorn Dam) can be done however, it will require a lot of energy.  Along the way you will pass under Congress Avenue which is home to the nations largest urban bat population.  Don't worry they won't bite.

Along the shores of the lake you will see logs with moving things on them - take a closer look, those are turtles basking in the sun.

A wonderful hike & bike trail surrounds Town Lake near downtown, the Southern shores of the lake contain Zilker Park and Auditorium shores.  The City of Austin is in the process of constructing a new pedestrian/bike bridge, at Lamar Street, across Town Lake to ensure the safety of those that travel across the river.
